The workshop was organized by UISP Settimo Ciriè.

Participants in the events were representatives from the partners’ countries, involving local NGOs, schools, local authorities and youth groups. A total of 40 persons from Bulgaria, Romania, Austria and 2 representatives from Turkey participated.

The main objective of the event was to train stakeholder representatives utilize a model for awareness raising campaign and prevention “Sport against racism” to be follow ed in Austria, Bulgaria and Romania. The workshops were based on interactive methods - case studies and “on the ground” training. ARIES participants witnessed a sports tournament organized for disadvantaged children from Bulgaria and Romania (orphans, roma and handicap children financed by a another EU project). The goal was to see in practice how sport can be used as an integration tool and that no differences can impede it. EU laws and policies in the field of children’s rights and the fight against racism and discrimination were discussed. Participants learned from best practices in Italy experienced in the UISP network.

Media representatives from Bulgaria, Romania and Italy were invited and published articles and interviews about the events. See attached articles and videos.

First module of activity in Bulgaria – May 16, 2009 Plovdiv

The event was organised by the Bulgarian partner Courage Foundation and Rokada Chess Association.

The first module involved a group of 30 children of age 11 – 16 from 6 schools from Plovdiv. 4 children from Olga Skobeleva Orphanage in Plovdiv participated. Two trainers/ psychologists started the seminar with a discussion “What does it mean to be different? Are differences good or bad? How to approach differences in others”. Children were asked to draw posters and make pantomime in small groups to express their ideas on differences in people and how to overcome prejudices based on differences. Following the seminar a chess tournament was organised of a Chess Olympic Games format with the participation of 6 mixed teams. The kids had to present their “country” team with information they know about the “home” country. They had to compete in a team of players they did not know before the event. Boys and girls from different schools collaborated no matter ethnic (children from roma origin were involved), social (orphans participated), and ability (beginners and advanced players were present) differences.

The event was visited by journalists from the Maritza newspaper, the regional daily newspaper in Plovdiv, and a short article was published (see attachments)
