But what if the team is gathered just before the match? What if, players are boys and girls from different countries, of different ethnos, different religion and differently able. Will there be a team spirit? Will there be fans supporting them?

Yes! It happens during the Mondialito – the Mini World Championship, organized by UISP Settimo Cirie. This year (2009), in April sports associations and school teachers from Bulgaria, Romania, Austria and Turkey witnessed the Mondialito. They condemned racism in Europe and expressed their willingness to promote sport as integration, antidiscrimination tool. Supported by Courage Foundation in Bulgaria, the Association for Ecology, Sport and Tourism in Romania and the Bulgarian Austrian Association in Austria they will transfer what they have learned in Italy in their countries, their towns and neighborhoods, involving the most vulnerable and risky groups. All initiatives and actions in the four partners’ countries - Italy, Bulgaria, Romania and Austria are part of the ARIES project, Against Racism in Europe through Sport, financed by Freedom, Justice and Citizenship Program of the European Commission.

Bulgaria and Romania are the newest and poorest members of the European Union. Radical changes in life during the last 20 years have brought democracy but also poverty and heavy social problems. Racism in Bulgaria has been geared towards the Roma people who are perceived to be of different racial and ethnic background. Racism in Romania has been growing after the fall of communism in 1989. Neo-nazi groups and all sorts of people constructed a barricade against the Roma people who are seen as thieves and uneducated people. Although racism is widely condemned throughout Europe, in different countries, the forms that racism takes are different for historic, cultural, religious, economic or demographic reasons.

Research on risk factors of racism and related violence shows that more important than any individual factor is the accumulation of risk factors. Adolescents exposed to multiple risk factors can not change family and social environment. What can be done is to encourage them to do sports as a social integration tool, a way to channel and control negative energy and educate tolerance and fairness. Sport is a perfect tool to educate self esteem and team work. It is also be used to raise a dialogue on human dignity and the fight against discrimination in all its forms. Topics such as European citizenship and common values that could be otherwise perceived as abstract, proposed in sports and seminar activities are interesting and involving. A proof for it is the participants’ enthusiasm during ARIES seminars and tournaments of mixed teams.
